Blessing and curse of amorphous solids: State of the art and perspectives

Amorphous solids exhibit promising properties such as large elastic deformation, high strength and relatively high hardness. The application of this class of materials, however, is often hampered due to their propensity to brittle failure, which is often preceded by a localization of plastic deformation within narrow, quasi-two dimensional, zones, the so-called 'shear bands'. Here we report on new insights into this issue from experiments on model systems and molecular dynamics simulations. As a salient finding, it is shown that a local shear transformation event, which occurs on the particle-scale, plays the role of an inclusion in the sense of continuum solid mechanics. This is not restricted to the solid state but also is observed in the liquid phase. It is shown that the range of the thus behaving solid-like region is determined by the distance travelled by sound during structural relaxation. Consequences of this finding for shear banding are discussed.
