Modelling the influence of inclusions on the fatigue lifetime of steels

The framework of microstructure-sensitive fatigue modelling allows to quantitatively evaluate the influence of microstructural parameters on the fatigue properties of steels. By applying this concept in systematic parametric studies, optimised microstructural configurations can be identified to achieve desired fatigue properties. The concept of microstructure-sensitive fatigue modelling relies on fatigue indicator parameters that serve to estimate the fatigue lifetime. These parameters are derived from the mechanical reactions of statistically representative microstructure models subjected to fatigue loads. The proposed contribution will introduce the concept of microstructure-sensitive fatigue modelling and present a novel fatigue indicator parameter. Afterwards, the influence of non-metallic inclusions is systematically studied by investigating shape, size and roughness influences on the fatigue lifetime. An outlook presents recent approaches to also consider residual stress fields around inclusions on the cyclic properties of steels.
